As part of a reorganisation of his senior team of ministers, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak named Victoria Atkins, a former Financial Secretary to the Treasury, as the new Secretary of State for Health and Social Care on Monday, according to his office.
Steve Barclay, who was transferred to the Department of Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs, has been replaced by Atkins.
She will take over management of the National Health Service (NHS), the state-funded healthcare system in Britain that is facing pressure from a growing patient waiting list and industrial action by healthcare workers.
Compared to roughly 7 million a year ago, there are currently 7.8 million people waiting for NHS treatment, a new record high.
Reducing the waiting lists is one of Sunak’s top five priorities, but he has all but admitted that it won’t happen this year, blaming months of strikes for delaying progress.
