Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is a hallmark event where groundbreaking software updates and hardware innovations are typically showcased. However, WWDC 2024 took a distinctive turn, emphasizing customization and artificial intelligence (AI) over new gadgetry. The introduction of iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence set the stage for a new era of personalization and smart technology integration across Apple’s ecosystem.
Apple Intelligence: The Future of AI
While customization and app enhancements are exciting, the most anticipated announcements centred around Apple’s AI initiatives, collectively known as Apple Intelligence.
Privacy-Focused AI Integration
Apple CEO Tim Cook emphasized that Apple Intelligence is designed to be powerful, intuitive, integrated, personal, and above all, private. This approach differentiates Apple’s AI from competitors by prioritizing user privacy in every interaction.
AI Across the Operating System
Apple Intelligence is embedded throughout the operating system, appearing in apps, search functionalities, and via Siri. New Writing Tools will help users analyze their writing and generate relevant images, while enhanced search capabilities will provide summarized data quickly.
Safari Summarization
Safari will feature a new summarization view that extracts key information from web pages and presents it in a concise, easily digestible format. This functionality aims to make browsing more efficient by highlighting the most relevant content at a glance.
ChatGPT Integration
For users who prefer OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Apple has announced that integration will be available later in 2024. This option will allow users to leverage ChatGPT’s capabilities without compromising privacy, including support for premium accounts.
Other than these, iOS 18 also has a bunch of other new tricks up its sleeves.
Unprecedented Customization
The latest iteration of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 18, was revealed with a strong focus on customization, offering users more control over their device’s appearance and functionality than ever before.
Home Screen Enhancements
iOS 18 introduces flexible Home Screen arrangements, allowing users to place icons anywhere, thus enabling unique layouts without the need for blank icons. Icons can now be themed with custom colours, and backgrounds can be tailored for dark mode or include colour filters. This flexibility allows users to create personalized and aesthetically pleasing Home Screens that reflect their individual preferences.
**Hiding or locking apps
**In iOS 18, users can lock apps to safely show photos or let others play games. When locked, accessing the app requires Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. Locked app data won’t show up in searches or notifications. Users can also hide apps in a secure, hidden folder. Additionally, iOS 18 allows for customizable icons and a new layout, along with updates to Control Center, iMessages, Mail, and more.
Control Centre Customisation
The Control Centre has undergone significant improvements, featuring data split over multiple pages that can be easily swiped through. For the first time, third-party apps can be added to the Control Center grid, enhancing accessibility and functionality. Users can also add and organize widgets, change their sizes, and navigate through different panes for app control, music management, and home automation.
