Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday extended greetings on the occasion of Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas, highlighting the role of the Indian diaspora in strengthening India’s global presence and preserving its cultural identity.
In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi described Indians living abroad as a crucial link between India and the rest of the world. “Warm greetings on Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas. The Indian diaspora remains a powerful bridge between India and the world. They have enriched societies wherever they went and, at the same time, stayed connected to their roots," the Prime Minister wrote on X.
Echoing PM Modi’s sentiments, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal also acknowledged the contributions of overseas Indians in a separate post on X.
“Celebrating our Indian diaspora on Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas. Across continents and cultures, Indian diaspora has carried our traditions, ideas and values. They are a living bridge connecting India and the world. On this day, Mahatma Gandhi, our greatest pravasi returned home. In the words of PM Narendra Modi, our diaspora is our Rashtradoots. From languages and festivals to values and traditions, the Indian diaspora has kept India’s civilisational spirit alive across continents," he wrote.

The government has, in recent years, launched several initiatives aimed at strengthening engagement with the global Indian community, recognising its contributions in areas ranging from business and technology to culture and diplomacy. Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas serves as a platform to reaffirm these ties and acknowledge the diaspora’s role in promoting India’s image worldwide.
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is observed annually on January 9 to recognise and honour the contributions of the overseas Indian community to India’s growth and development. The date holds historical significance, as it marks the day in 1915 when Mahatma Gandhi—widely regarded as the greatest Pravasi—returned to India from South Africa, went on to lead the freedom movement, and profoundly shaped the nation’s destiny.
