India batter Tilak Varma will miss the major part of New Zealand T20I series after undergoing abdomen surgery on Wednesday. The BCCI on Thursday evening said Tilak won’t be available for the first three games of the five-match series that starts from January 23. However, a replacement hasn’t been named yet.
The 23-year-old has been discharged from the hospital.
“Tilak Varma underwent surgery for an abdominal issue in Rajkot on Wednesday, 7 January. He was discharged from the hospital on Thursday morning and is scheduled to fly back to Hyderabad on Friday. He is currently stable and progressing well," BCCI said in a statement.
Tilak underwent the surgery a day after playing Vijay Hazare Trophy match for Hyderabad against Bengal. As per reports, he underwent testicular surgery but didn’t pick up the injury during the match.

He is said to have experienced pain later on, following which he underwent scans and then the procedure.
“Tilak will resume physical training and gradually return to skill-based activities once his symptoms have fully resolved and wound healing is satisfactory," the statement added.
Tilak’s availability for the remaining two matches of the New Zealand series “will be assessed based on his progress during the return-to-training and skill phases."
The development is concerning for the Indian team given that Tilak is a key member of their T20 squad and the world cup starts in less than a month’s time from now.
India will launch their title defense against USA in Mumbai on February 7.
