Sandipan Garg, cousin of late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, who had accompanied Zubeen to Singapore, has been arrested in connection with the singer’s death. Sandipan Garg serves as Superintendent of Police (In-Charge) with the Assam Police Service (APS) and was arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam’s Criminal. This is the fifth arrest in the case. “We have arrested Sandipan Garg. Now, we are doing the necessary legal formalities," CID Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta told news agency PTI.
“Our team has taken him to a court here. We will seek police remand," it quoted another senior officer as saying. The apprehended police officer was interrogated several times in the last few days over the singer’s death in Singapore last month, it was known.Zubeen Garg had passed away on September 19, 2025, during a cultural festival in Singapore. Sandipan was reportedly present at the time of Zubeen’s death.
Four persons, including Zubeen’s manager Siddhartha Sharma, musician Shekharjyoti Goswami, Singer Amritprava Mahanta and North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, had earlier been arrested and are currently in police custody. On Monday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said barring one, seven others present with singer Zubeen Garg during his last moments in Singapore were yet to respond to the CID summons. Sarma said Rupkamal Kalita, who was present on the yacht when Garg died while swimming in the sea on September 19, had responded to the summons of the SIT probing into his death. However, the seven others have not said anything about coming to Assam to help in the investigation, Sarma said at a media briefing in Guwahati.
