This is one reason why diesel cars are commonly used in commercial fleets and heavy-duty applications — they can endure high mileage and tough conditions without frequent breakdowns.

However, diesel cars are not without controversy. In recent years, environmental concerns have put diesel technology under the spotlight. Diesel engines emit lower amounts of carbon dioxide (CO₂) compared to petrol engines, but they produce higher levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter — pollutants that contribute to air quality problems and respiratory issues. The “Dieselgate” scandal in 2015 further tainted the image of diesel vehicles, when major car manufacturers were found guilty of cheating emissions tests. Since then, many governments, especially in Europe, have introduced stricter regulations and low-emission zones that discourage the use of older diesel vehicles.
